Broken Boiler? Replace It For Free With ECO4

broken boiler

If any of your household appliances stopped working, it would be a significant inconvenience. But when you think about appliances, many people fail to think of their boiler. However, when it breaks down, it easily becomes an issue you cannot ignore.

If you’ve experienced things like frequent breakdowns, increased energy bills, or poor heating performance, these could be indicators that your boiler should be replaced. Luckily, in the UK, you can take advantage of the ECO4 Scheme and replace your broken boiler at no cost, creating a more comfortable, energy-efficient home.

Signs You Need a New Boiler

Frequent boiler breakdowns are expensive and unpredictable and can be stressful, especially if your household is left vulnerable during the cold of winter. Some are hesitant to get a boiler replacement because a new boiler can be more expensive than individual repair costs.

If you spend money on your boiler on repair after repair, consider replacing your old boiler to save money in the long run. Signs you may need to replace your boiler include the following.

  • Decade Old Boiler — If your boiler is ten years or older, it may be time to replace it, even if it functions fine without any issues. As time goes on, wear and tear occurs, increasing the likelihood of breakdowns in the future. Sourcing original replacement parts becomes increasingly challenging and costly when your boiler becomes obsolete. You can always consult with an engineer before committing to a new boiler.
  • Consistent Breakdowns — An occasional breakdown is relatively normal, especially if you rarely service your boiler. But if your temperamental boiler is dipping into your budget and needing constant repairs, it is likely time for an upgrade.
  • Delayed Heat — Boilers and radiators should be able to heat up almost instantly. If you notice your boiler takes around 10-20 minutes before you start to feel any heat, it may not be working properly or to its full potential. Even if the problem isn’t necessarily with your boiler, your heating system probably needs a check-up.
  • Questionable Smell—If you notice an unpleasant smell that lingers around your boiler, make sure to call a professional immediately. A strange smell coming from your boiler could be a possible carbon monoxide leak. CO2 is actually odourless and tasteless, but a leak that is preventing the boiler from working properly can cause the odour. Because CO2 is potentially fatal, you should never ignore a leak and reach out to a professional as soon as possible.
  • Odd Noises—Any clunking, banging, or other loud noises can mean many different issues with your boiler. It can be anything from a pressure issue to a broken valve or even build-up within the boiler. While this may just be an easy one-time fix, it can also be an indicator that you need to update your boiler.
  • Spillage A reappearing puddle around your boiler can point to a broken internal part or some other deterioration.
  • Fluctuating Water Temperatures—If you notice that your faucet water temperature fluctuates from hot to cold, it could be a sign that your boiler needs to be replaced. Nobody likes to go from scalding to freezing when taking a shower!
  • Frozen Pipes During Colder Months—Usually, the heat circulating in your home’s pipes keeps them from freezing. If you have a faulty boiler, however, it may not be able to successfully push heat through the pipes, causing them to freeze. If you start experiencing frozen pipes, it’s a good idea to have your boiler checked.
  • Random Energy Bill Increase—There will obviously be an annual increase because of inflation and rising market prices, but a fast increase in energy consumption could be the result of a faulty boiler. A general observation is that the older a boiler is, the more it will cost to keep it running.

Applying for the ECO4 Scheme is a relatively straightforward process that begins with checking your eligibility by providing basic details about yourself, your property, and any benefits you receive. After you’ve completed the eligibility assessment, you will receive a follow-up telephone assessment for further information.

Next, a registered installer will come to your property to assess what energy-efficient upgrades or installations are needed. Following this inspection, your installer will give you the installation details and the next steps.

Ensure you have all your documents ready, maintain clear communication with your installer, meet deadlines, and submit accurate details about you, your home, and your benefits. Once your installation has been completed, you provide evidence that your installation was done up to standard, and your installer will claim the grant for you.
