How it Works – ECO Grants

ECO grants

If you’re looking for a way to upgrade your home appliances or increase the ability of your home to withstand the winter cold whilst also looking to save money, an ECO Grant could be the solution you’re looking for. But what is an ECO grant? And how do you know if you are eligible?

In 2021 alone, 398,000 measures were installed through ECO grants. This handy guide could be your ticket to saving thousands of pounds by taking advantage of some government schemes aimed at helping you. We’ll explain ECO grants, how they work, and how to know if you are eligible.

What is ECO?

ECO, short for Energy Company Obligation, is a government scheme to help you get financial support from your energy supplier to make your home more energy efficient. By doing this, they also help cut carbon emissions and help reduce fuel poverty. The biggest energy suppliers have targets to help households with energy efficiency measures.

Energy providers aim to help lower-income households, fuel poor situations, and those in vulnerable situations to heat their homes. It is up to the discretion of each energy provider what energy-saving measures they want to fund, how much of that funding they will provide, and who will install the features in the customers’ household.

Am I Eligible For ECO Funding?

In order to be eligible, you must own a home or have permission from your landlord to get the improvements done. The amount of support and what energy-efficient improvements are approved are up to the discretion of the energy company, however we can help with advising what you are eligible for.

However, there are several factors that make it more likely that you’ll qualify:

  • If you get the Warm Home Discount in the ‘core’ group, get eligible benefits and fit the income requirements
  • Live in social housing with an EPC rating of E or lower (check your energy performance certificate or ask your landlord or social housing association)

If someone in your household received any of the following benefits, you may be eligible to receive a grant to replace your boiler.

  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Child Benefits
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Warm Home Discount Scheme Rebate
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Saving Credit
