About the Boiler Replacement Grant
The Boiler Replacement Grant, also called the Eco Boiler Scheme, was launched in early 2013 in an effort to reduce the UK’s energy consumption and give grants to low-income households to help improve their home’s energy efficiency.
What the Grant Offers
When you qualify (eligibility guidelines below) for a boiler replacement grant, you could be eligible to receive around 60-70% of the cost of the boiler replacement covered by the government.
Only one grant per property is allowed.
Eligibility
The Affordable Warmth Obligation, which started in April 2022, states that energy suppliers must install replacement boilers for households that meet eligibility criteria and cannot afford a new boiler. While many people will receive a free boiler grant, most applicants will likely receive a grant that pays for part of the cost of replacing a non-condensing or condensing boiler, as well as making other energy-saving improvements such as insulation.
Eligible Benefits
Eligibility for a free/partially funded boiler grant depends on several factors. First, you must be a permanent resident within the property and must be receiving one of the following benefits:

Ineligible Properties
Eligibility for this grant requires you to live in a privately owned or rented property. However, if the social housing property has an energy rating of E, F, or G., individuals living there are also eligible in some circumstances.
Grants are not available for:
- Some social housing
- New build properties (except certain self-builds)
- Properties that have already had government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
Appliance Eligibility
Grants are only available for gas boiler replacements. Your installer will advise which heating system is suitable for your property and help you understand the different options.
Boiler Replacement
It is essential that your new appliance is in perfect shape and installed properly. It must:
- Be capable of meeting the full space heating and hot water requirements set by your property’s specifications
- Replace an existing fossil fuel heating system, such as gas, electric, or oil
- Meet certain technical standards, such as minimum efficiency requirements and must be boiler plus complaint (your installer can advise you on these)
Senior Citizens and Boiler Replacement
If you are a senior (60 or over) and receive a Pension Credit, you may also be eligible to receive a free replacement boiler. Pensioners who receive a standard state pension don’t qualify for a free boiler grant, but if you’re a senior and claim Pension Credit, you may be eligible for assistance under the boiler grant scheme.
